Restaurant Review: Ibrahim B.B.Q (Scarborough, Canada)

So last night we decided we wanted to check out the Taste of Lawrence in Scarborough, Ontario, as we haven't gone to a food festival in a while. There were a few halal booths serving items such as burgers, Malaysian food, and vegetarian and seafood items, but after exploring a bit we decided that we would pass, as we weren't feeling for heavy or greasy dishes.

An unexpected waterfall from the sky led us to seek refuge under various roofs with other festival-goers, and finally we settled on going to Ibrahim B.B.Q, which was located right across the street from where we parked.

We ran for our lives and wound up in a line just outside the door, soaked to the bone and a little dishevelled, awaiting what we hoped to be delicious middle eastern food.

The line didn't let up the entire time we were there, so we had high hopes, as well!

Here's the first half of the menu on the screens, you can zoom in to take a look at the prices. I was looking for something lighter and healthier, so I settled on a half BBQ chicken, and opted for only salad. and my husband ordered the Shawarma mixed plate.

And here's the second half of the menu. My measuring stick for Middle Eastern Shawarma plates and BBQ chicken is as follows:

5/5 would be considered:

  • Shawarma Palace (in Ottawa, on Rideau St.) quality and quantity for the Shawarma plates
  • For the BBQ chicken would be comparable to the grilled chicken plates we've had in Madinah and Makkah, or, nearer to home, Grillades Yasmine in Montreal, which uses a charcoal grill for their chicken.

They had some other interesting items, like Lamb Shank, Kaftas, and the usual Shawarma fare.

Alright so here's the mixed shawarma plate. The shawarma beef was well seasoned and absolutely delicious, but the chicken could have been a little more so, the rice too. The chutney-like pepper sauce was really tasty, and the garlic sauce was good, too. The salad wasn't an actual salad, moreso the salad toppings that are added to shawarma sandwiches.

Also in the pictures it looks like potatoes are supposed to be part of the plate, and it wasn't there.

I'd give it a 3.5/5

For the half chicken plate, there was a little confusion during my order, since I saw 1/2 kg Chicken on the menu and assumed that meant a half of a whole chicken, but after telling them what I wanted, they easily complied. The chicken was really juicy and was briefly barbecued before packing.

The salad, again was looking for a real salad and not just an assortment of shawarma toppings, but it was alright.

I'll also give this a 3.5/5, as I was looking for a really barbecued taste all over the chicken, similar to Grillades Yasmine. This was more of a baked/roasted chicken, which is lightly barbecued before serving.

I would say we received a great value for the price we paid. It wasn't the most top-notch Middle eastern places we've been to, but still very good.

If you're in the area I would recommend visiting! And the best part, they're open really late!
