Restaurant Review: Makan Place - Vancouver, Canada

On our recent trip to Vancouver in May 2016, we spent the day driving and exploring Buntzen Lake, which is located about a 1.5 hour drive from downtown Vancouver. On our way back, we decided to have lunch at what seems like the only halal restaurant in the vicinity, Makan Place, a Singaporean & Malaysian Restaurant.

The first thing I was happy about was that they had their own parking lot! Woohoo! We were so unused to parking on the street everywhere in Vancouver!

We were greeted by two Muslim Singaporean & Malaysian sisters and we asked for their recommendations. They recommended the Beef Rendang with rice and the Mi Goreng Noodles with Chicken (Malaysian Style), so we went with that!

We also ordered some Chicken Satay Skewers on the side, along with a tall cup of traditional Tea Tarik, and Milo Dinosaur, a chilled chocolate drink.

First our order of Mi Goreng arrived, and my oh my was this ever tasty. It was a huge platter of freshly cooked noodles jam packed with vegetables and meat. There was potatoes, eggs, bean sprouts, chicken, cabbage, carrots, peas, and more!

Rayyan, a seasoned Malaysian food eater, said it tasted authentic. It was absolutely delicious. Everything was seasoned well and it was enough food for two (needless to say, we happily took leftovers back to the hotel). I'd give this a 5/5.

Next we got our Chicken Satay Skewers along with some veggies and peanut sauce. These tasted pretty good and grilled well, the standard satay taste. I would have liked a slightly larger quantity however for $6.95 they were well worth their price. I'd give it a 4/5.

Next up was the Beef Rendang with Rice, which also tasted great, again a pretty standard authentic taste. I'd give it a 3/5.

Our drinks were delightful. I love Tea Tarik so it was lovely to have the familiar slightly-sweet taste again. The Milo Dinosaur we had was pretty awesome too, the last one I had in Singapore came with a scoop of chocolate ice cream on top which I'm not sure if it's part of the drink or not, but this one still tasted great.

These were enormous cups so we struggled to finish the tea and took about half of the Milo Dinosaur with us to go.

All in all we had a wonderful meal at Makan Place and their restaurant is much recommended. We had a chance to chat with the two ladies after our meal and they were very kind and friendly, they had provided a place for us to pray and told us that the Muslim Community in the area was active and had masajid nearby.

It was a lovely visit and if we ever go back to Vancouver, I'd definitely love to return inshaAllah.
